The tragic and moving film the Three Deaths of Marisela Escobedo tells the viewer about a mother whose youngest child dies at the hand of an abusive man. He is arrested and confesses to the crime. However, the three judges who run his trial declare him not guilty.

The film mentions that a law passed in Mexico states the Court cannot accept a confession as proof of guilt because the police may have coerced it from the defendant. And so the mother Marisela finds new lawyers and they work on an appeal which works. However, the man who killed her daughter does not go to prison instead he escapes capture.

So Marisela begins protesting and mobilizes other parents who did not get justice like her. They continue protesting until tragically Marisela is shot to death outside of a government building.

Her remaining children continue her cause until threats to their lives escalate to the point they have to stop them in Mexico. One grown child has to gain asylum in the United States to be able to continue to fight for his deceased mother and sister.

It is tragic that a country close to the U.S. cannot protect their citizens nor gives them justice.

The few who do so include a prosecutor who is part of the film. She has a family member who gets kidnapped. Law enforcement act and the family member is found and the guilty punished. If only they took this same stance for their citizens across all of Mexico.
