The Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History of He-man and the Masters of the Universe begins around the time George Lucas began to shop his idea of toys to go with his first Star Wars film. Mattel passed and regretted it when the movie, its sequels, and toy line became massive hits.
So Mattel asked their writers and artists to come up with a new hero and He-Man and later She-Ra his sister came to be. It is a fun and entertaining documentary that took me back to the days I watched both programs. I enjoyed the fantasy, the kingdom, and the ability of someone young like me who can use magic power from a sword to transform themselves into someone who is confident and unstoppable. This concept got me hooked to He-Man and She-Ra – nothing else.
Years later after the cartoon dimmed and no new episodes appeared. By chance I saw Masters of the Universe with Dolf Lundgren and Frank Langella. I knew Lundgren from Rocky.
However, I really got a kick out of Langella’s Skeletor, I doubt anyone could have portrayed him better. Unfortunately Masters of the Universe movie did not revive the He-man franchise. However, it would come back and if you choose to watch this film you will find out how it has been reborn.
So, if you like me wish to revisit fond childhood memories, this documentary film is for you. It will not disappoint and give you a lot of information about He-man and his universe.
