Guillermo Vilas: Settling the Score: A Netflix Tennis Doc

Video from Netflix Latinoamerica

Former Argentine tennis player Guillermo Vilas has an impressive career. He has a lengthy record including 951 wins and 297 loses, won 62 titles including four Grand Prix and a Masters.

Yet through out his career one goal Vilas sought more than all the others: to have the number one rank in the world of tennis. He strove for this goal his entire professional career and could not grasp it.

Decades later Argentine journalist Eduardo Poppo decides to comb the tennis rankings during the height of Vilas’ career to prove the tennis great did indeed deserve the top spot.

This documentary film splits between two parts: Poppo’s work with mathematician Marian Ciulpan who went through tennis records from 1973 to 1978. And the other half a biography of Vilas from a child through his years as a professional tennis player and musician before bringing them together.

In the end Poppo and Ciulpan write a report more than 1200 pages long proving Vilas did indeed deserve the number one spot in the world for seven weeks during these years in his career.

The combination of fighting to right a sports wrong and a view of Vilas life could not have been better done than it was. The only wrinkle I wish I got to see more of Vilas and his music.
