The End is the Beginning moves closer to Picard going on his first space mission in fourteen years. In the first few minutes we see Romulans attack Picard in his home; Raffi agreeing to help him find a captain, ship, and find a possible location for Dr. Bruce Maddox.’

The other parts of the episode show us more of Soji’s abilities. She knows multiple languages, has great compassion, continues to fall for Narek and calls home to check on her parents and ask about her sister.

A little later Soji gets permission from Hugh to speak with Ramdha. She is a Romulan, who was once assimilated into a Borg just like Hugh had been. Both are free now but whereas Hugh recovered and now helps on the former cube, Ramdha’s mind is fractured. And after a short time and a tense incident, Soji is able to get through to Ramdha

The End is the Beginning is okay. The problems I have with this episode is how Raffi keeps telling JL, ( her nickname for Picard), between drinks of the wine, she wants him to leave, she won’t help him. We then see what led to currents events fourteen years earlier.

Raffi waits for Picard outside anxious to hear what happened with his proposal to save the Romulan Empire. When he does return she gets a shock when he informs her Star Fleet refuses his plan. It does not matter that the rescue would not affect the Mars efforts, the hatred for their enemy is too great. And not only that he has resigned from Star Fleet. And from his decision, Raffi’s career and life goes into a spiral.

Yet fourteen years later, Raffi swallows her anger and agrees to not only ask Cristobal (Cris) Rios to let him use his ship but also decides to join them to fly to where Maddox is.

Not only that but Dr. Agnes Jurati wants to come along too. In fact she shows up at Picard’s home just as an attack by Romulans ends.

These scenes and a few others did not endear me to this episode. I felt a sense of contrivance to things falling easily into place for Picard. Also, I agree with a line Raffi says to Picard to the effect of, you always come up with a unique solution.

She is right and while listening to Robert Meyer Burnett’s Robservations episode #330, one such solution was mentioned. He said you could use multiple ships and their transporter technology to save the Romulan empire. I agree with him this idea could have worked. However, that is not what occurs and instead a super secret sect of Romulans have infiltrated Star Fleet ect.

I do hope with next week being off Earth will help Picard improve in the fourth episode and those that follow.
