It was the day before Thanksgiving and my family and I got together to see a holiday train exhibit at a cultural museum in downtown Indianapolis. We had seen it the year before with my niece who loved it so much , we decided to repeat it this year thinking she would react the same way.
Only it didn’t happen instead a wooden train set and farm animals on a nearly table entranced her. She made a bee line for it but my brother (her father) steered her toward the main attraction. Eventually though my niece got to do as she pleased. For over half an hour I saw delight in her face as she got the wooden animals and the train to do her bidding.
Once my niece had her fill, we took her one floor down to a western town and then a coloring area. There she got to choose the colors she wanted for her paper train. My day could have ended with this but alas the day was not done yet. The Indianapolis Zoo was ahead of us.
I do admit going to the zoo in November is odd since it is getting cooler by the day but my niece’s need to see the animals eventually overrode my wish to be back at home & warm.
The first thing we did was visit the baby sharks so my niece could pet them. I didn’t see why my niece was so exited to do this until I did it too. I instantly liked it. Later when we saw the dolphins I tried to be impassive but when a dolphin followed my niece’s hand I couldn’t help but smile.
I must admit part of me is glad for this time with my niece. I really like seeing my her happy. I know it isn’t possible all the time but I believe my niece should have all the fun and good times she can get before her childhood innocence fades away. In fact another chance to see my niece beam with delight will happen December 3rd when we go to the circus. I can’t wait!
