The Breadwinner: an animated tale

The Breadwinner

The Breadwinner is a tale about 11-year-old Parvana who grows up in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. She and her father sell hand-made items in the market until one day he gets arrested. It drives Parvana to take care of her family and to find a way to free him.

To give herself strength as well as the rest of her family she tells the tale of a boy who must defeat an elephant to get back his villages’ seeds.  This film is beautifully done and the animation is super.   Although this is a film for the young, I’d recommend parents sit in and watch as well. They will enjoy it as much as their child or children. Also, there are a couple of sections that a child may need some explanation for like why Parvana pretends to be a boy or why the women and children are preyed upon for not staying inside their homes.

Other than these couple of things, this film is really good and does a good job conveying how stories can give strength and perseverance to get anyone through difficult times.
